Can You Replace Metal Halide Bulbs with LED?

Can You Replace Metal Halide Bulbs With LED?

Short answer: Yes, and here’s why upgrading to LED is the best choice for commercial and industrial lighting efficiency.

For decades, high pressure, metal halide (MH) bulbs had been the chosen luminaire for commercial and industrial lighting applications, both indoors and outdoors. Metal halide wall packs and high bay lights are common in parking lots, high bay work areas and retail stores.

For lighting of large areas that require high lumen outputs (around 75–100 lumens per watt), MH bulbs and fixtures proved to be an incandescent bulbs energy efficient alternative that also produced a higher quality light. Typical applications included stadium floodlights, warehouse bays, gymnasiums, and security lighting.

Why You Should Consider Replacing Metal Halide with LED

But today, you can replace your existing fixture with high bay metal halide bulbs with the much more energy efficient LED retrofit bulb technology. Not only can an equivalent LED replacement bulb deliver the same crisp, high-quality light and the LED corn cob bulbs have a similar shape to metal halide bulbs. This upgrade reduces energy consumption, cuts maintenance costs, and improves lighting quality across commercial environments.

LED Technology vs Metal Halide

Metal Halide Bulbs – Limitations:

Metal halide bulbs are notorious for the length of time it takes them to warm up and reach their maximum lumens output. Therefore, they are typically used for areas that do not require constant on/off switches, like retail stores and factories. For metal halide bulbs to operate efficiently, they must be supplied with full power, and they also require a more regular bulb replacement schedule.

Average specs for MH bulbs:

  • High pressure MH bulbs range from 75-100 lumens/watt.
  • Cool white light – color temperatures from warm 3000K to cool 20,000K.
  • Lumen output requirements for your space size and ceiling height

  • Heat emission – very high with 10-15 percent of the total energy consumed is emitted as heat.
  • MH lamps require a ballast to operate with a slow start-up and slow cool-down.

High bay LED lighting technology offers a higher level of illumination while using considerably less power (wattage). This means lower utility bills, even with comparable lumens output. You can also expect your LED replacement bulbs to last longer with a significantly lower reduction in brightness and performance over the life of the bulb.

Here is why LED bulbs are taking over high wattage applications:

  • 30-90 lumens/watt, 80 to 90 percent efficient,
  • color temperature from 2200K-6000K ranging from “warm” yellow to light or “cool” blue.
  • Longer lifespan: 25,000–100,000+ hours

  • LEDs operate at cooler temperatures and emit very little forward heat.
  • No ballast required, and they feature instant on/off cycling.

This makes LEDs ideal for applications requiring frequent switching, such as motion-sensor-controlled outdoor lighting and warehouse safety lighting.

What are LED corn replacement bulbs

LED corn lights are a nickname for a high wattage LED replacement bulb that looks similar to a cob of corn in shape and corn kernels because of the rows of LED chips along the lamp. These LED bulbs are an incandescent bulb’s energy-efficient alternative along with being a substitute for other high pressure, mogul-base bulbs like metal halide bulbs.  Unlike a metal halide bulb, which emits light in all directions, LED bulbs are more directional, focusing light where it’s needed most.

Corn cob LEDs are commonly used in street lamps, post tops, high bays, and area lights for commercial properties.

LED corn cob bulbs are available with a ballast bypass, meaning they can be directly wired to line voltage. This effectively removes the ballast transformer from the circuit so that they can be used in either a medium E26 socket or mogul-based (EX39/E39) socket. Without the ballast, power usage is reduced, and LED light bulbs require less maintenance.

Choosing a LED metal halide replacement

The first factor in replacing metal halides with an equivalent LED energy-saving bulb is to match the LED bulb wattage to the existing fixture wattage. Other considerations include which LED color choices you prefer, which can range from a warm 3000K and go up to a crisp blue/white 5000K.

Another option is whether the corn cob LED light bulbs have auto voltage sensing meaning they can operate at a range between 120v and 277V. Finally, you want to consider the lumen outputs, as LED replacement wattages range from 12 watts up to 200 watts.

Takeaways

  • LED corn lights are a nickname for a high wattage LED replacement bulb.
  • High bay LED lighting technology offers a higher level of illumination while using less power
  • LED color choices range from a warm 3000K and go up to a crisp blue/ white 5000K.

Why Your Solar Lights Are Dim & How To Fix It

Solar lights are a sure way to reduce your electricity bill, whether they’re solar garden lights, patio spotlights, or streetlights. But what happens when those lights do not shine bright the way they used to? Thankfully, there are only a handful of causes for solar light to grow dim or go out, and in most cases, it’s not hard to make lights brighter. This troubleshooting guide will walk you through the most common solar lighting issues and how to fix them—whether you’re maintaining residential landscape lights or large-scale solar street lights.

How Do Solar Lights Work?

To determine the problem, first, think about how solar lights work. The solar cell changes sunshine into electricity. A flow of charged particles makes its way to the battery and recharges. A sensor detects whether it’s dark outside and turns on the light when it is. A breakdown at any point in this system—solar panel, battery, sensor, or LED bulb—can result in reduced brightness or total failure.

1. Dying Or Weak Batteries

The first step is checking the batteries. Even though the recharging is done by the sun, batteries power solar lights while they’re shining. The most common reason for dimming solar lights is that the rechargeable batteries are dying. If the battery is low, it’s important to remove the battery right away. A defunct battery can erode, leak acid, and damage electrical components.

When you replace the battery, be sure to remove the pull tab on the new battery, or it will not work.

What to do:

  • Replace the battery with a new rechargeable type compatible with your solar unit.
  • Always remove the pull tab on new batteries before installation.
  • Check if the battery compartment is corroded—if so, clean it with a small amount of white vinegar on a cotton swab.

2. Lack of Direct Sunlight?

Most solar lights need about six hours of sunlight during the day to recharge. The exact amount of time depends on the intensity of the sun, the efficiency of the solar panel and the battery. If the unit does not get enough light, illumination will not last as long as it should when it gets dark. If you have trees, a building, or something else that prevents sunlight from reaching the solar cell for much of the day, you may have to move it. A solar lamp does not have to be in direct sunlight all day long, but it’s important to let light reach it during most of the daylight hours.

What to do:

  • Relocate the light to a spot that receives sunlight for the majority of the day.
  • Avoid placing the unit in shaded areas beneath trees or roof overhangs.
  • Position the solar panel to face south if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere for maximum light exposure.

3. Dirty or Blocked Solar Panels

If there’s dust and debris on the panels, they simply can not absorb as much light as they should. If the buildup is too severe, the batteries may not change at all. Even a thin layer of dust, however, limits how much sunlight gets through to do the recharging.

A cleaned light panel means an effective light. You can use mild soapy water to remove dirt and make sure the solar panel is clean. Be sure to rinse well and squeeze off any remaining water.

What to do:

  • Use mild soapy water and a soft cloth to clean the solar panel.
  • Rinse thoroughly and dry completely to prevent water spots.
  • Wipe panels monthly for optimal performance, especially in dry, dusty environments.

4. Clouded or Aged Plastic Covers

Some solar lights have a plastic housing or protector covering the solar cell. Over time exposure to outdoor conditions and UV damage from sunlight make it clouded, limiting the sunlight that reaches the cell and recharges the battery.

Sometimes this protector is replaceable. If it’s not, you may be able to remove a thin layer of this plastic with a fine-grit sandpaper. Wash the plastic before sanding. Keep the sandpaper and plastic wet while you’re sanding, then wash and dry the surface.

What to do:

  • If replaceable, install a new clear cover.
  • If not, gently sand with fine-grit sandpaper while keeping the surface wet.
  • Polish with plastic restorer to improve clarity further.

Ensuring Longevity

To ensure the longevity & optimal performance of your solar lights, regular maintenance is key. Beyond the immediate fixes for dimming lights, such as battery replacement or cleaning dirty panels, also consider the environmental impact of your lighting choices. Opting for solar lights is a step towards sustainable living, but maximizing their efficiency through proper placement, regular cleaning, and timely maintenance further reduces your carbon footprint as well. Additionally, by choosing high-quality, durable solar lights and responsibly recycling old batteries, you contribute to a cycle of sustainability that benefits not just your immediate environment but the planet as a whole. Remember, the care you invest in your solar lighting solutions reflects your commitment to environmental stewardship & sustainable living.

Solar Panel Maintenance

Cleaning and Inspection

Regular maintenance of your solar panels is crucial to ensure they perform at their best. Over time, dirt, dust, and debris can accumulate on the surface, reducing their ability to absorb sunlight and generate electricity efficiently. Here are some practical tips for keeping your solar panels in top condition:

  • Clean the Panels: Use mild soapy water and a soft-bristled brush to gently remove dirt and debris. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could damage the panels.
  • Inspect for Damage: Regularly check the panels for any signs of damage, such as cracks or broken glass. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent further deterioration.
  • Check the Mounting System: Ensure that the panels’ mounting system is secure and level. A stable setup maximizes sunlight exposure and efficiency.
  • Professional Help: If you’re not comfortable cleaning and inspecting the panels yourself, consider hiring a professional. They have the expertise to perform thorough maintenance and spot potential issues early.

By keeping your solar panels clean and well-maintained, you can ensure they continue to provide reliable electricity for your solar lights, maximizing their efficiency and lifespan.

LED Bulb Quality and Lifespan

Factors Affecting LED Bulb Performance

The performance and lifespan of LED bulbs are critical to the overall effectiveness of your solar lights. Several factors can influence how well these bulbs perform:

  • Quality of LED Chips: Poor quality LED light chips can lead to faster light attenuation and reduced brightness. Investing in high-quality chips ensures better performance.
  • Heat Dissipation: Inadequate heat dissipation can cause the bulbs to overheat, leading to faster light attenuation. Look for bulbs with good heat dissipation features.
  • Driving Current and Voltage: Driving LED lights with constant current or voltage above the rated value can speed up light attenuation. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to avoid this issue.
  • UV Exposure: Ultraviolet rays can degrade the fluorescent powder in LED bulbs, reducing their luminous efficiency. Ensure your bulbs are designed to withstand UV exposure.
  • High Driving Current: Using a driving current above the rated value can cause light attenuation. Stick to the recommended current levels to maintain bulb performance.

What to do:

  • Choose high-quality LEDs rated for outdoor use.
  • Ensure fixtures have good heat dissipation (e.g., metal heat sinks).
  • Avoid using bulbs beyond their rated voltage or current range.

To ensure your LED bulbs perform optimally and last longer, choose high-quality bulbs with good heat dissipation, follow the manufacturer’s guidelines, and regularly inspect and replace them as needed. This will help maintain the brightness and efficiency of your solar lights, ensuring reliable outdoor lighting.

How Much Do Stadium Lights Cost?

Whether you manage a stadium that’s large or small, it’s crucial to have lights you can count on. The last thing you’d want is a burnt-out bulb on game day, and having to replace your bulbs often will end up costing you an arm and a leg.

Wondering how much reliable stadium lights cost? Keep reading and learn all about it with this in-depth guide!  In this article, we break down stadium lighting expenses across hardware, installation, energy usage, and upkeep to help you plan accurately.

Breaking Down the Cost of Stadium Lights

The exact cost of lights will also depend on the size, brand, wattage, and more. Lighting requirements vary from stadium to stadium so you could end up saving thousands of dollars if your venue is on the smaller side of the spectrum.

To have an accurate idea of the costs involved, it’s also important to factor in the lights themselves, the installation cost, the electricity that powers them, and the maintenance fees. If you only focus on one aspect, then you may end up going way over budget. On average, stadium lighting systems can range anywhere from $20,000 to over $500,000 depending on the scope and performance needs.

Installation Costs

The installation of stadium lights is quite involved and requires professional help from companies like Olympia Lighting, making it the most expensive aspect of investing in lights. Whether you’re installing metal halide lamps or something different, the installation fees can end up being tens of thousands of dollars.

When having stadium lights installed, it’s important to keep in mind that poles alone are not enough. To keep your sports field as safe as possible, you’ll need reinforcements. The heavier the lights are, the more reinforcements you’ll need, and the price for reinforcements alone can turn out to be twice or even three times the cost of the lights. This is why you should opt for stadium lights with lightweight materials like diecast aluminum so that you can save money by having a less extensive reinforcement setup. Another hidden cost to consider is trenching and cabling, which varies based on the stadium’s existing infrastructure and layout.

Operating Costs

Even with the most energy-saving LED lights, it still costs money to keep them on during games. If you want an accurate budget, then you should factor in the annual cost of running your stadium lights, the type of light, and the wattage.

For example, if you have 20 sessions a month and use field lights that need 72,000 watts of power, then your month-to-month bill could be as high as $1,700. Are you wondering how you can reduce that amount? One of the best ways of saving money is by investing in the most state-of-the-art LED smart bulbs. The reason they cost less to power is due to their efficiency.

To reach the brightness of 72,000 watts, for example, LED stadium lighting would only need a fraction of the energy. This translates to a significant reduction in your monthly electricity bill of up to $500! Modern LED stadium lights can achieve high lumen output using as little as 30-40% of the energy required by legacy systems.

Maintenance Costs

With the proper care, stadium lights can last for a decade or longer. For long-lasting LED floodlights, you can expect to get as much as 100,000 hours of light from them before they have to be replaced. However, a lack of maintenance could cause you to replace them sooner than that. So, be sure to clean them, check on the parts, and keep up with maintenance, to allow you to have a well-lit sports facility you can be proud of. Preventive maintenance—such as routine inspections and thermal monitoring—can reduce long-term replacement costs and boost performance.

What Influences the Cost of Stadium Lights?

Here are key factors that influence your total cost of stadium lighting:

  • Type of lighting: Metal halide vs. LED vs. hybrid systems
  • Field size and height requirements
  • Lighting standards based on sport—e.g., baseball vs. football
  • Control systems like smart dimmers and motion sensors
  • Local regulations and permitting fees

Key Takeaways:

    • To have an accurate idea of the costs involved, it’s also important to factor in the lights themselves, the installation cost, the electricity that powers them, and the maintenance fees.

    • The installation of stadium lights is quite involved and requires professional help from companies like Olympia Lighting, making it the most expensive aspect of investing in lights.

    • With the proper care, stadium lights can last for a decade or longer!

Advantages of LED Lighting in Cold Weather Conditions

LED lighting in commercial, residential, and public venues has shot up in recent years, with over half of all lights sold being LED-based. This is because they are environmentally friendly and can withstand the harshest and coldest weather conditions year-round. Given their advantages in frigid temperatures, LED lights are an excellent choice for outdoor lighting in parks and roadways in New Jersey.

Below, we list several reasons why LED lighting in wintry weather conditions will prove itself the best choice. So, read on, as you might want to switch out all your lights to LEDs by the end.

Advantages of LEDs in Winter

Durability in Cold Weather

LED lighting is becoming a popular street light option. This is because they can withstand extreme temperatures, and even thrive in cold environments.  In the winter, cold weather can start interfering with how bright a regular bulb burns due to its excessive heat emission. This can cause the bulbs to burst, leaving you with having to change the bulb in the cold. Luckily, LEDs do not suffer from this problem. Their light output and efficacy increase as the temperature drops making them a great solution for outdoor lighting.

Stronger Lighting

Parks are also switching their lighting systems to LEDs. This is because, in the winter, the cold weather can start interfering with how bright a regular bulb burns. If it is cold enough, the bulb will have trouble shining bright and the pressure inside reduces, a problem that LEDs do not suffer from.

No Warm-Up Time

Regular bulbs can take a long time to reach their most outstanding brightness in moderate weather. In winter, this can take even longer. As the system starts to heat up you might suffer inadequate lighting for several minutes.

LED lights do not have this problem since they are built to withstand drastic weather changes. They begin working to their full potential as soon as you activate them, which is a huge plus in those dark winter months.

Uses Less Power

One of the main reasons so many people are installing LED lighting these days is the cost of running lights. LED lights use little energy when in use. As a result, an LED lighting budget can stretch much further as they pull less power, meaning you can have them on for longer or run a brighter facility.

Performance

LED lights end up lasting longer due to the decreased use of power to produce light. This ends up saving you money and time from not having to change bulbs as often. You will feel confident you have the proper lighting in your parks, cold storage freezers, parking lots, and more.

How LED Lighting Can Help You

The above reasons should have you reaching to find a new LED lighting solution. We have vast experience installing LED lighting in many different contexts at Olympia Lighting and are ready to help you out. Get in contact to learn how we can put you on the path to a brighter home or office today.

Outdoor parks are vital to a community, offering recreational areas and athletic opportunities for locals and visitors alike. From sports fields and walking trails to playground facilities and bathrooms, visibility is key throughout each area. The correct lights will ensure patrons’ safety and security, while also making navigation easy and intuitive.

As you consider the possible outdoor lighting options, LED lights should be at the top of your list. Today, we’re looking at some of the top advantages that LED lighting can provide for outdoor park facilities.

Long-Lasting Use Of LED Park Lights

With the right maintenance and care, most outdoor LED lights can last up to 50,000 hours, or roughly 5.5 years. That’s if you plan to keep them on 24/7, which most facilities do not require.

You can maximize the longevity of your LED Fixtures by adding a Photocell Sensor that will turn the light On automatically at dust and shut it Off at dawn. The LED lights we offer can last up to 10 years when operating on a Photocell Sensor!

Strategically installed at a park, a Post Top Area Fixture or Area Light Fixture can provide years of use and enjoyment. While they might cost a little more up-front, the long-term savings are significant.

Excellent Illumination With LED Flood Lights

Outdoor LED lights deliver instant, high-lumen brightness, the moment you turn them on. There isn’t an initial warm-up period to contend with, so you can get the full effect right away.

The light is not only quick and powerful, but it’s also as close to natural sunlight as possible. There are no glares to distort visibility and colors remain true to life.

In a public park, security is always top of mind. Most LED lights cast a wide beam, which eliminates shadows and effectively illuminates all nearby surfaces. This makes them perfect for sports fields, parking lots, and open communal spaces.

This way, the fun doesn’t have to stop when the sun goes down. You can safely hold concerts, sports games, and other events when you’re confident in your lighting and you know everyone can feel safe.  Safety is #1 when it comes to all our products!

Energy Savings

Most park managers are looking to optimize savings at every turn. They might not have a substantial budget to spend on outdoor lighting fixtures, and they need to make every cent count.

This is where LED lights shine. Not only are they more effective, but many models can help reduce your current energy use, especially if your current lighting solution is old or outdated. Making the switch to a more energy-efficient solution could generate savings that you can pour back into the community!

Temperature Flexibility

The park doesn’t usually close when it gets too hot or too cold. Instead, the facilities are forced to adapt, along with any patrons who choose to brave extreme temperatures!

While some bulbs could crack or suffer damage under such conditions, most LED Light Fixtures can withstand them with ease. LED lights maintain consistent performance even in extreme heat or cold, ensuring year-round reliability Their output and performance remain the same, no matter what it’s like outside.

Reduced Maintenance in Recreational Areas

Keeping up with a park can be laborious and time-consuming, especially if you’re tasked with regularly replacing burned-out bulbs and not producing bright enough light. When you invest in LED Light Fixtures, you don’t have to worry about that task for a very long period of time.

Not only are most LED Light Fixtures resistant to temperature damage, but they’re also designed to repel dust, water, and other issues that plague many outdoor lights. If you keep them in good shape, you can go years between repairs and replacements.

The Test Samples were exposed to a  60-kW propane burner (see pictures below), and the data recorded included Smoke Release Rate (SRR), Heat Release Rate (HRR) and Total Smoke Release (TSR).

Below are the test results and the PASS judgment:

Below are the Acceptance Criteria:

  1. 1. The peak rate of heat release (HRRs) measured during each test shall be 100 kilowatts or less. The result is 11KW & 12KW (about one-tenth the allowed HRR)
  2. 2. The peak smoke release rate measured during each test shall be 0.21 m2/s or less, SRRs. The result is 0.08 & 0.10 m2/s (less than half the allowed SRR)

3. The total smoke release (10-minute test duration) shall be 75 m2 or less, TSR. The result is 4 & 8 m2  (about one-tenth the allowed TSR)

Overall the results show OLYMPIA’s Linear UVC LED Strip is very safe for operation in a sealed plenum even under extreme conditions.

Olympia UVC Linear LED Strips Series Tested to Meet Zero Ozone Concentration

Olympia UVC Linear LED Strips Series Tested to Meet Zero Ozone Concentration

In recent testing by Intertek – an independent test laboratory – Olympia’s highest power UVC Linear LED Strip (UVS-4FT-120W-UVC-277V) is tested to have an 8-Hour ozone concentration of fewer than 0.001 parts per million (ppm). That is five times better than UL 2998 max allowed ozone concentration!

The 8-hour ozone concentration test shows Olympia UVC Linear LED Strips emitting zero ozone!

The peak ozone concentration of Olympia’s 120 Watt UVC Linear LED Strip indicated in the table below is just 1.4 parts per billion (ppb). In comparison, zero ozone is a max. of five parts per billion (ppb) according to UL 2998.

To summarize, Olympia’s UVC Linear LED Strips series:

  • Meet UL 867 Electrostatic Air Cleaners: maximum ozone concentration limit of 0.05 ppm / 50 ppb
  • Meet UL 2998 Environmental Claim Validation: maximum ozone concentration limit of 0.005 ppm / 5 ppb
